Athens safety overview for solo female travellers
Athens is a city of contrasts, ancient ruins sit alongside street art, and quiet neighbourhood squares neighbour bustling markets. For solo female travellers, Athens is generally safe, particularly in the well-touristed areas of Plaka, Monastiraki, and Kolonaki. These neighbourhoods are lively during the day and feel secure in the evenings thanks to the Greek tradition of late dining.
Exarchia, the famous anarchist neighbourhood, gets a mixed reputation but is actually home to some of the city's best cafés, bookshops, and street art. It's generally fine during the day, though some solo travellers prefer to avoid it late at night. The area around Omonia Square has improved significantly but can still feel edgy after dark.
The Athens metro is modern, clean, and safe, it was built for the 2004 Olympics. Taxis are affordable, but use the BEAT app rather than hailing on the street to avoid fare disputes. Greeks are warm and social, and solo dining is perfectly normal, tavernas will welcome you warmly whether you're alone or in a group.
