Cairo safety overview for solo female travellers
Cairo is one of the most intense cities in the world, 22 million people, relentless traffic, and a sensory overload that can be both thrilling and exhausting. For solo female travellers, Cairo is safe in terms of violent crime (which is rare against tourists), but unwanted attention, catcalling, and persistent touts are common experiences that require mental preparation.
The safest and most comfortable areas for solo women are Zamalek (an upscale island neighbourhood with embassies, cafés, and a quieter pace), Maadi (a leafy, expat-friendly suburb), and parts of Heliopolis. The area around the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square is busy and touristy but manageable. Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili bazaar are fascinating but intense, best visited during the day.
Dress conservatively, loose, long clothing that covers arms and legs is strongly recommended. This genuinely reduces unwanted attention. Use Uber or Careem (a Middle Eastern ride-hailing app) rather than hailing taxis. The Cairo Metro has women-only carriages (the middle cars), use them during rush hour. For the Pyramids, book a licensed tour or arrange transport through your hotel to avoid hassle at the site.
