Delhi is India's sprawling capital, and it can feel overwhelming on first arrival. With the right preparation, solo female travellers can have an incredible experience. The key is knowing which neighbourhoods are comfortable and how to move around safely. If you are arriving late at night, book accommodation in South Delhi near a metro station and arrange an airport pickup through your hotel.
The best areas to stay for solo female travellers are in South Delhi. Hauz Khas has a village feel with cafes, galleries, and a lake. Defence Colony and Greater Kailash are upscale and quiet. Lodhi Colony is leafy and well-lit. Connaught Place (CP) in central New Delhi is the commercial heart, busy and generally safe with plenty of restaurants. These neighbourhoods feel safe to walk around during the day and in the early evening.
The Delhi Metro is a game-changer for solo female travellers. It is clean, efficient, and has dedicated women-only carriages at the front of every train. Use the metro whenever possible rather than auto-rickshaws or taxis. If you do take a taxi, use Uber or Ola rather than hailing from the street. Old Delhi around Chandni Chowk and the Red Fort is chaotic and intense but also magical. Visit during the day with a charged phone and your wits about you. Avoid isolated areas and poorly lit streets after dark.
