Lima safety overview for solo female travellers
Lima is a city that wins people over through its food, it's consistently ranked among the world's best culinary destinations, and the ceviche alone is worth the trip. For solo female travellers, Lima is safe in the right districts, with the upscale coastal neighbourhoods of Miraflores and Barranco being the clear favourites for visitors.
Miraflores is the safest district and the one most tourists base themselves in, it's modern, walkable, has ocean views, and is full of restaurants, parks, and shopping. Barranco is the bohemian arts district next door, with street art, live music venues, and the famous Bridge of Sighs. San Isidro is the business district and also very safe. The historic centre (Cercado de Lima) around Plaza Mayor is worth visiting during the day.
Outside the tourist districts, Lima requires more awareness. Avoid walking in Callao, parts of La Victoria, and San Juan de Lurigancho. Use Uber or InDriver rather than hailing taxis from the street. The Metropolitano (bus rapid transit) connects key areas and is a safe option. Lima's coastal malecón (boardwalk) from Miraflores to Barranco is one of the best solo walks in South America, paragliders overhead, Pacific views, completely safe.
