Los Angeles safety overview for solo female travellers
Los Angeles is a city of extremes, glamorous beaches next to gritty urban blocks, world-class dining next to food deserts. For solo female travellers, safety depends heavily on which neighbourhood you're in. Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Silver Lake, and parts of Downtown (DTLA) around the Arts District feel safe and vibrant. Venice Beach is fun during the day but can feel sketchy at night along the boardwalk.
LA is a car city, and public transport is limited compared to most major cities. The Metro is expanding but doesn't cover many key areas. Ride-sharing (Uber/Lyft) is the default way to get around after dark. Avoid walking long distances at night in unfamiliar areas, the city's sprawl means blocks can change character quickly.
Skid Row in Downtown LA should be avoided entirely on foot. Parts of South LA and East LA have higher crime rates and aren't typical tourist areas. Hollywood Boulevard itself is touristy but can feel uncomfortable at night. The best solo traveller experience in LA is during the day, hiking Runyon Canyon, exploring the Getty Museum, strolling the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, or browsing the Melrose shops.
