Montreal safety overview for solo female travellers
Montreal is one of the safest large cities in North America and a fantastic destination for solo female travellers. The city has a distinctly European feel, outdoor café culture, cobblestone streets in Old Montreal, and a food scene that rivals much larger cities. It's bilingual (French and English), though you can get by with English in most tourist areas.
The Plateau Mont-Royal is arguably the best neighbourhood for solo travellers, it's walkable, colourful, full of independent shops and restaurants, and has a welcoming, bohemian atmosphere. Mile End is the creative heart, with bagel shops, microbreweries, and vintage stores. Old Montreal is beautiful but more touristy. The Village (Le Village) is the LGBTQ+ quarter and is vibrant and friendly.
The Montreal Metro is clean, safe, and covers the city well. Crime rates are low, and you'll feel comfortable walking in most neighbourhoods after dark. Winter is cold (seriously cold, think -20°C), but the underground city (RÉSO) connects 33km of tunnels with shops, restaurants, and metro stations, making it possible to explore without braving the elements.
