Rio de Janeiro safety overview for solo female travellers
Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visually stunning cities in the world, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana, and Ipanema are bucket-list destinations. For solo female travellers, Rio requires more awareness than most cities on this list, but with preparation and street smarts, it's absolutely doable and deeply rewarding.
The safest neighbourhoods for tourists are Ipanema, Leblon, and parts of Copacabana (particularly the blocks closest to Ipanema). Botafogo and Flamengo are increasingly popular and feel safe during the day. Santa Teresa is bohemian and charming but some streets can be isolated. Lapa is the nightlife district, go with a group or someone you trust rather than alone at 3am.
Essential safety habits in Rio: don't wear flashy jewellery or watches, keep your phone hidden when walking, avoid the beach after dark, and don't carry more cash than you need. Use Uber or 99 (a Brazilian ride-hailing app) rather than street taxis. The metro is modern and safe but limited in coverage. Avoid favelas unless visiting with a reputable, community-led tour.
