Seoul safety overview for solo female travellers
Seoul is one of the safest major cities in Asia and an exceptional destination for solo female travellers. Violent crime is extremely rare, public transport runs like clockwork, and the city is clean, modern, and easy to navigate even without speaking Korean. Many solo women describe Seoul as the place where they first felt truly comfortable travelling alone. Streets are well-lit, convenience stores are open 24/7, and you can walk alone at night in most neighbourhoods without concern.
The best neighbourhoods to stay for first-time solo female travellers are Hongdae (young, creative, great nightlife, always busy), Myeongdong (central, safe, close to everything), Insadong (traditional, quiet, close to palaces), and Gangnam (upscale, modern, excellent metro connections). Bukchon Hanok Village offers traditional Korean houses and quiet streets. All of these areas feel safe at virtually any hour, as Seoul's nightlife culture means streets are busy well past midnight.
The Seoul Metro is world-class, with signs in Korean and English, and it is spotlessly clean. Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) are everywhere and are a lifesaver for solo travellers. Eating alone is completely normalised, and the growing "honbap" (solo dining) culture means many restaurants are designed for solo diners. Areas that feel less comfortable include the red-light areas near certain older stations, but these are easy to avoid and clearly distinct from the main tourist and residential neighbourhoods.
