Lisbon is a sun-drenched, hilly city with stunning views, incredible food, and a growing reputation as one of Europe's best destinations for solo travellers. For solo female travellers, Lisbon is generally very safe, the Portuguese are warm and welcoming, and the city has a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere.
The safest and most enjoyable freguesias include Chiado and Príncipe Real (elegant, great cafés and viewpoints), Alfama (atmospheric, labyrinthine old quarter, safe during the day), Santos and Lapa (quieter, residential, with river views), and Belém (home to the Jerónimos Monastery and pastéis de nata from Pastéis de Belém).
Pickpocketing is the main concern, particularly on Tram 28 (extremely crowded and a hotspot for thieves), in Rossio and Baixa (busy tourist areas), and at Cais do Sodré station. Alfama's narrow streets can feel isolated late at night. The Mouraria and Intendente areas have gentrified but some blocks retain a rougher edge after dark.
Lisbon's metro is modern and safe. The trams are iconic but crowded, ride early morning or take the bus instead. The city is hilly, wear comfortable shoes. Solo dining is easy and normal, and Lisbon's time zone (same as London) and affordable prices make it increasingly popular with remote workers.
