Interrail is the best way to see Europe solo. One rail pass, dozens of cities, no flights, no check-in stress. You step off a train in a new country, spend a few days exploring, and hop on the next one. The trains are safe, the hostels are social, and Europe's density means you're never more than a few hours from somewhere completely different.
Lisbon → Barcelona → Paris → Amsterdam → Berlin → Prague → Vienna → Budapest → Rome
Start in one of Europe's most affordable capitals. Alfama's winding streets, pastéis de nata, tram 28 (watch for pickpockets), rooftop bars at sunset. Lisbon has a slow, warm energy that's perfect for easing into a solo trip.
Gaudí, beach, tapas, nightlife. La Sagrada Familia is worth every euro. El Born and Gràcia are the best neighbourhoods for wandering. Barcelona gets busy in summer. Watch your bags on La Rambla.
Le Marais for cafes, Montmartre for views, the Seine at dusk for that main character moment. Paris rewards solo travellers who slow down. Sit in a café, walk without a plan, buy a crêpe from a street vendor. Ignore the Eiffel Tower queue.
Canals, bikes, museums, and the Jordaan neighbourhood. Rent a bike and ride like a local. The Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House are must-visits (book ahead). Albert Cuyp market for food. Amsterdam is compact and feels very safe.
History, art, nightlife, street food. The East Side Gallery, Museum Island, Prenzlauer Berg for brunch. Berlin has the best nightlife in Europe and a creative, alternative energy. Cheaper than Paris or Amsterdam.
Fairytale architecture, excellent beer, affordable everything. Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, Vinohrady for local restaurants. Prague is small enough to walk everywhere. Watch out for tourist-trap restaurants on the main squares.
Coffeehouses, classical music, palaces, and Sachertorte. The Ringstrasse is a magnificent walk. Naschmarkt for food. Vienna is elegant and incredibly safe. Solo cafe culture is a Viennese tradition.
Thermal baths, ruin bars, the Danube at night. Széchenyi Baths are perfect solo. The Jewish Quarter has the best nightlife (ruin bars). Margaret Island for a peaceful walk. Budapest is one of Europe's best-value capitals.
End in the Eternal City. Trastevere for dinner, Monti for aperitivo, the Colosseum at golden hour. Solo gelato is a Roman tradition. Eat pasta, drink wine, walk everywhere. The perfect way to finish a European trip.

May to June and September to October are ideal. Warm weather, manageable crowds, reasonable prices. July and August are peak season: everything is busy and expensive, especially Southern Europe. Trains can fill up in peak season, so reserve seats in advance for popular routes (Paris to Amsterdam, for example).
A Global Interrail Pass costs around €300-400 for flexible travel over a month. Book seat reservations separately for high-speed trains. Budget varies wildly: Lisbon and Budapest are cheap; Paris and Amsterdam are expensive. Plan for €50-100 per day depending on the city.
Pack a 40L backpack (not a suitcase, you'll be on trains). Comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket, a plug adapter (Europe uses Type C/F), and a reusable water bottle. Layers for the north, light clothes for the south.
