Shanghai is a modern, fast-paced megacity and one of the safest large cities in Asia for solo female travellers. China has very low rates of violent crime, and Shanghai specifically feels safe and well-managed. The main challenges are the language barrier and navigating the digital ecosystem rather than personal safety.
Every district in Shanghai is generally safe. The Bund and Puxi side are where most tourists spend their time, the Former French Concession is the most charming neighbourhood with tree-lined streets, cafรฉs, and boutiques. Jing'an is upscale and central. Pudong is the futuristic skyline across the river. Xuhui and Changning are comfortable residential areas popular with expats.
There are no neighbourhoods to actively avoid in Shanghai. Some outer areas are less interesting for tourists but not unsafe. The main things to watch for are taxi scams (always use DiDi, China's ride-hailing app), the tea ceremony scam (someone invites you for 'tea' that ends with a huge bill), and the general challenge of not having Google, WhatsApp, or most Western apps without a VPN.
Shanghai's metro is extensive, modern, and safe, signs are in English and Chinese. Get a VPN before arrival, set up WeChat and Alipay for payments, and carry a translation app. Solo dining is completely normal. The city's mix of colonial history and futuristic architecture makes it endlessly explorable.
