Buenos Aires safety overview for solo female travellers
Buenos Aires is a city with enormous personality, tango clubs, incredible steak, beautiful architecture, and a café culture that rivals Paris. For solo female travellers, it's generally safe in the main tourist and residential areas, though petty crime (phone snatching, pickpocketing) is a real concern that requires awareness.
The safest barrios (neighbourhoods) for solo travellers are Palermo (especially Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood), Recoleta, Belgrano, and San Telmo (during the day, especially during the famous Sunday market). Puerto Madero is modern and safe but can feel sterile. Avoid La Boca outside of the touristy Caminito street, and be cautious around Once and Constitución, particularly at night.
Porteños (Buenos Aires locals) are warm, social, and love to talk. Solo dining is easy, parrillas (steak restaurants) and cafés welcome solo guests. The Subte (metro) is old but functional and safe during operating hours. Buses are extensive but confusing, use Google Maps for routes. Uber works but is technically in a grey area; many locals use it anyway. Keep a low profile with electronics on the street.
