Santiago safety overview for solo female travellers
Santiago is widely regarded as the safest capital city in South America, and for solo female travellers, it lives up to that reputation. The city is modern, well-organised, and has excellent infrastructure. The backdrop of the Andes mountains is spectacular, and the wine regions of Maipo and Casablanca are easy day trips.
The best neighbourhoods for solo travellers are Lastarria (charming, walkable, full of cafés and galleries), Providencia (upscale, safe, great restaurants), Bellavista (bohemian, home to Pablo Neruda's house, lively at night), and Las Condes (modern, safe, more corporate). The historic centre around Plaza de Armas is interesting during the day but less lively at night.
The Santiago Metro is modern, clean, and the best way to get around. It has women-only carriages during rush hour. Petty crime like pickpocketing exists in crowded areas and on public transport, keep your bag in front of you. Avoid walking in poorly lit areas at night, particularly around the Estación Central area. Overall, Santiago is a city where solo women can move around with confidence.
