Mexico City safety overview for solo female travellers
Mexico City (CDMX) has become one of the hottest destinations for solo travellers in the Americas, and solo women are leading the trend. The city is vibrant, affordable, has world-class food, and a creative energy that's hard to match. With the right neighbourhood choices and basic street smarts, solo female travellers can have an incredible experience here.
The safest and most popular colonias (neighbourhoods) for solo travellers are Roma Norte, Condesa, Coyoacán, Polanco, and Juárez. These areas are walkable, full of restaurants and cafés, have good Wi-Fi for remote workers, and feel safe during the day and into the evening. Avoid wandering into unfamiliar colonias at night, and use Uber or DiDi rather than street taxis.
The metro is cheap and extensive but can be extremely crowded during rush hour. Women-only carriages are available during peak times and are marked with signs. Metrobús (the bus rapid transit) is also a good option. Keep your phone out of sight on public transport and carry minimal valuables. The historic centre (Centro Histórico) around Zócalo is impressive during the day but some surrounding streets empty out after dark.
