San Francisco safety overview for solo female travellers
San Francisco is a compact, walkable city with incredible views, a world-famous food scene, and a progressive, welcoming culture. For solo female travellers, many neighbourhoods are safe and enjoyable, the Marina, Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, the Castro, Hayes Valley, and the Mission (especially along Valencia Street) are all great areas to explore.
The Tenderloin, however, is a neighbourhood that solo travellers should approach with caution, it's centrally located but has visible homelessness, open drug use, and can feel uncomfortable, particularly for women alone. Parts of SoMa (South of Market) around 6th Street share similar challenges. The Civic Center area near City Hall is a mixed bag.
San Francisco's public transport (Muni buses and the BART metro) is functional but not as polished as some cities. Cable cars are touristy but fun. Walking is the best way to explore, just be prepared for serious hills. Fisherman's Wharf is the tourist hub, but locals prefer the Ferry Building for food. Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and Lands End are spectacular for solo walks.
