Toronto safety overview for solo female travellers
Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with over 200 ethnic groups and 140 languages spoken. For solo female travellers, this diversity translates into a welcoming, tolerant atmosphere where you'll feel comfortable regardless of your background. The city is generally very safe, with low violent crime rates compared to other cities its size.
The best neighbourhoods for solo travellers include the Distillery District (historic, pedestrian-only, full of galleries and cafés), Kensington Market (eclectic, independent, bohemian), Queen West (shops, restaurants, street art), and the Harbourfront. The PATH, the world's largest underground shopping complex, connects much of downtown and is useful in Toronto's cold winters.
The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) runs subways, streetcars, and buses that cover the city well. It's safe and affordable. The main area to be cautious around is parts of Jane and Finch and some blocks near Sherbourne and Dundas after dark. The Entertainment District can get rowdy on weekend nights. Otherwise, Toronto is a city where you can walk confidently in most areas.
