Is Oslo safe for solo female travellers?

🇳🇴 Norway · 17 bydeler rated

🟢 13 Safe
🟡 4 Moderate

Oslo is one of the safest cities in Europe and an excellent destination for solo female travellers. Norway has among the lowest crime rates in the world, and Oslo reflects this, clean streets, efficient transport, and a culture built on trust and equality.

Virtually every bydel in Oslo is safe for solo women. The city centre around Karl Johans gate, Aker Brygge (waterfront dining), Grünerløkka (Oslo's hipster neighbourhood with cafés and vintage shops), and Frogner (elegant residential area with the Vigeland sculpture park) are all comfortable and welcoming.

The Grønland area near Oslo Central Station has a more multicultural character and some solo travellers find it slightly less polished at night, but it's not unsafe. Tøyen has been gentrifying rapidly and now has excellent food and the Munch Museum. Overall, Oslo has very few areas that require any special awareness.

The main challenge in Oslo is cost, it's one of the most expensive cities in the world. Budget carefully, eat lunch specials, and take advantage of the Oslo Pass for free museum entry and transport. The T-bane (metro), trams, and buses are clean, safe, and punctual.
