Budapest is one of Europe's best-value destinations, with thermal baths, ruin bars, and stunning Danube views. For solo female travellers, the city is generally safe, both the Buda (hilly, residential) and Pest (flat, lively) sides are comfortable to explore, with a few areas needing awareness.
The safest and most enjoyable districts include the Castle District on the Buda side, the Jewish Quarter (District VII, home to the famous ruin bars), Andrássy Avenue (District VI, elegant boulevard), and the area around the Central Market Hall. The Margaret Island in the Danube is a peaceful escape and completely safe.
The party district around Kazinczy utca and Gozsdu udvar in District VII gets very rowdy on weekend nights, it's safe but loud and boozy. Keleti station area (District VIII) can feel uncomfortable after dark. The outer parts of District VIII (Józsefváros) have a rougher reputation but are gentrifying.
Budapest's metro, trams, and buses cover the city well. The yellow Line 1 is a UNESCO site in itself. Taxis should be booked via Bolt rather than hailed from the street. The thermal baths (Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas) are perfect solo activities.
