Vienna is consistently ranked one of the world's most liveable cities, and for solo female travellers, it's exceptionally safe. The city is elegant, well-organised, and has a cultural richness that makes solo exploration deeply rewarding, museums, coffeehouses, classical music, and stunning architecture at every turn.
Virtually all of Vienna's bezirke are safe for solo women. The 1st district (Innere Stadt) is the historic centre, the Ringstrasse, Stephansdom, the Hofburg. The 7th (Neubau) and 4th (Wieden) are hipster-friendly with independent shops and cafés. The 2nd (Leopoldstadt) around the Prater is pleasant and increasingly trendy.
There are very few areas of concern. The area around Praterstern (the park entrance near the station) can feel uncomfortable late at night. The 10th (Favoriten) and 15th (Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus) near Westbahnhof are grittier and less touristy but not dangerous. Overall, Vienna is one of the safest cities on this entire map.
Vienna's U-Bahn, trams, and buses are clean, punctual, and safe at all hours. The coffeehouse culture is perfect for solo travellers, sitting alone with a Melange and a newspaper is a Viennese tradition. Dining alone is completely normal.
