Solo travel in the USA

The US East Coast is one of the easiest solo trips in America because you don't need a car. Washington DC, New York, and Boston are connected by fast Amtrak trains, and since Montreal is just a short trip from Boston, this route naturally crosses into Canada for a bilingual finale. Four cities, two countries, one great solo trip.

The East Coast route

Washington DC

The Smithsonian museums are free. All of them. The National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building, and Georgetown for food and nightlife. DC is walkable, well-organised, and feels safe in the main areas. The Metro is clean and connects everything. A strong start to the trip.

New York City

The city that doesn't need an introduction. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, explore the Met (pay what you wish), eat a dollar slice, sit in Central Park, get lost in Greenwich Village. New York is one of the best solo travel cities in the world because doing things alone is the default. Nobody cares if you're eating alone. Everyone's doing it. The subway runs 24/7.

Boston

America's most walkable city. The Freedom Trail is a self-guided history walk through the city. Harvard and MIT campuses are open to explore. The North End has the best Italian food outside Italy. Boston feels smaller and more personal than New York. The accent is a bonus.

Montreal (optional: cross into Canada)

Just a few hours from Boston. French-speaking, creative, with incredible food. Old Montreal is cobblestoned and charming. The Plateau is where locals eat, drink, and people-watch. Bagels from St-Viateur or Fairmount (pick a side). Summer festivals (Jazz Fest, Just for Laughs, Osheaga) and terrasse culture from June to September make it a perfect warm-weather stop.

Is the USA safe for solo female travellers?

The cities on this route are generally safe for solo women, especially in the tourist and central areas. New York feels safer than its reputation suggests: Manhattan and main parts of Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Park Slope, DUMBO) are perfectly fine. DC's main areas around the Mall and Georgetown are well-policed. Boston is compact and walkable.

Use common sense after dark. Avoid empty streets late at night. Uber and Lyft are available everywhere. The subway in New York is safe during busy hours but can feel uncomfortable on empty late-night trains.

Montreal is very safe. Canada consistently ranks among the safest countries for solo women. The city is bilingual (French and English) and welcoming.

How to meet people on the East Coast

American culture is outgoing. People in bars, coffee shops, and parks will talk to you if you're open to it. Hostels in New York (HI New York, for example) organise events and tours. Free walking tours operate in all four cities. Museums and galleries are natural solo activities where conversations happen.

Montreal adds another dimension: the francophone culture means the social scene feels different from the US cities. Terrasse culture (outdoor dining and drinking) is big in summer. Pull up a chair, order a pitcher, and see what happens.

Through Just Gutsy, solo travellers are starting to meet up on the East Coast, an easy way to find your people along the route.

Best time to go

September and October are ideal. Warm enough for walking, autumn foliage in New England, lower hotel prices than summer. April and May (spring) are also good. Summer (July-August) is hot and humid, especially in DC and New York. Winter is cold everywhere and Montreal gets serious snow.

What to pack and budget basics

Budget: $100-180 USD per day. The USA is expensive for accommodation. Hostels in New York are $50-80/night for a dorm at the cheapest end. Airbnbs and budget hotels run $120-200/night. Food can be cheap (diners, pizza, street food) or expensive (restaurants). Amtrak trains connect DC to New York to Boston. Boston to Montreal is a bus or a short flight.

Pack comfortable walking shoes (you'll walk 20,000 steps a day in New York), layers for changing weather, and a portable charger. Tipping is expected in the US (18-20% at restaurants). Canadian tipping is similar.
